Get To Know Lovers Key State Park

There was a time when you could only arrive at Lovers Key by boat. Back then it was said that lovers traveled to this island to enjoy the island’s solitary atmosphere.

All of this has changed today and now it’s included in a group of four barrier islands that make up the state park, which is a wildlife haven. Here you’ll find West Indian manatees, bottlenose dolphins, roseate spoonbills, marsh rabbits, and bald eagles.

Parts of the Park to Enjoy

Lovers Key is the outermost island of four, and is a 2.5 mile stretch of beautiful beachfront. The Travel Channel ranked it as the number four beach in Florida. Behind Lovers Key you will find Inner Key, Long Key and Black Island. Inner Key is nestled between the beach and Black Island – an island full of mangrove channels, where parking, the gift store and main rental store is located. Long Key is slightly separated from the rest to the south. There are over 5 miles of trails for hiking and biking crisscrossing three of the four islands. You can also enjoy kayak tours. Anglers and boaters can use the park’s boat ramp to launch their boats across the main street from the park entrance.

You can also enjoy the northern beach. This is accessible through the northern gate at Big Carlos Pass.

Regardless of where you are, there are plenty of places to enjoy your rented bicycles, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, beach chairs and umbrellas. If you have time, enjoy exploring all areas of this beach and the unique attributes of Lover’s Key State Park.

Activities to Enjoy

You’ll enjoy the two mile long beach, which is accessible either by a boardwalk or tram. There you can engage in activities such as shelling, swimming, picnicking and sunbathing. If it’s picnicking that’s of interest to you, then there are a few things you should know.

First, there are several picnic areas located throughout the park. These are on the beach, as well as along the inner waterways and backwaters. With so many great spots available, all with grills and trash cans. There’s also a recycling program in place with containers for both aluminum and plastic available throughout the park, not only at picnic areas. You’re sure to find the perfect area for your picnic. For instance, you should consider taking the courtesy tram to the south beach. There you’ll find a pavilion with 8 picnic tables, a gazebo, and restrooms. When not in use, it’s a great place to get out of the sun for a bit.

After your picnic is over, why not take a walk over the two bridges there to the mid portion of the beach. They’ve left this area untouched, with no facilities. Of course, you can also enjoy some swimming. After all, there’s 2.5 miles of beautiful beachfront to enjoy. There are no lifeguards on duty, so you swim at your own risk. However this area is known for the relative safety of it’s beaches.
