Kayaking is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of Lover’s Key. With just a kayak and a paddle, you have access to gorgeous blue waters and skies, lush native greenery, and a host of wildlife at your fingertips.

In this article, we will cover four tips for beginners and experienced kayakers alike planning to spend time in the water.

Safety First

Southwest Florida’s Barrier Islands, especially Lover’s Key, are a verifiable playground for those interested in water activities. From splashing in the surf to fishing and boating, there is something for everyone.

For those of us who have an interest in kayaking and those other activities listed above, safety is the number one most important thing to consider. There is no faster way to ruin a good time than by you or someone else getting hurt.

This is why it is vital, above all else, to wear a life jacket. Hey, we get it — a bright orange puffer vest safety device isn’t the sexiest piece of attire you will wear that day, but it is essential for safety.

Have peace of mind and confidence in knowing that you will not run into danger if your kayak flips over into the water. Speaking of which…

Wear Proper Attire

Only secondary to wearing a (properly fitting) life vest is wearing weather-appropriate attire. During the summer months, and much of the rest of the year, Florida’s climate is hot, humid, and sun-filled.

Little else can ruin your week-long trip like getting harsh sunburns on day one. That is why it is important to consider the current weather situation.

If, like most Florida days, it is hot and filled with sunshine, you need to not only wear a high-SPF sunscreen, but you need to also wear clothing that can breathe and covers the majority of your skin.

This is the time to wear long-sleeve shirts and pants made from cotton, not a bathing suit without a shirt on (we know, it’s tempting)! In addition, we suggest wearing a hat that has a 360-degree brim.

Go As A Group

Kayaking, while generally a safe sporting activity, should be done as a group activity. Find at least one other person, preferably experienced, to go along with you. Going as a group is both more fun and safer.

Expect the unexpected. While we cannot foresee every possibility, having a group of people adds eyes and able hands to help in any situation. Whether someone flips their kayak, gets lost, or even passes out from the heat of the sun, it is vital not to kayak alone.

Final Thoughts

If it is your first time renting a kayak, or even if you are experienced, these are crucial factors to consider before hitting the water in Lover’s Key.

Not only do you need to have a life vest and clothing that is appropriate for the hot Florida sun, but you should also consider going as a group for both fun and safety.

Spring is a splendid time to go birding at Lovers Key State Park. Osprey, bald eagles, snowy plovers and least terns all live in the park. If you would like to go birding at Lovers Key State Park, try these birding tips to ensure a successful trip.

Bring the Binoculars

While you can get close to many birds at the park, you can get an even better look when you bring a pair of binoculars. Consider those with 7-power or 8-power binoculars as they provide ample magnification while still providing a wide enough view that they will be easy to use.

Carry a Field Guide

A great field guide makes it easy to identify the birds that you are seeing. There are several guides that you might want to consider including:

Choose the Right Time of Day

While you can see birds almost any time of day at Lovers Key State Park, they are most active in the morning as the sun is rising, and they are active again at sunset. Therefore, consider coordinating your schedule so that you are at the park during those hours.

Get in a Boat

Many birds are best viewed from the water. Renting a kayak or canoe gives you exclusive and silent access to parts of the part that the landlubbers will never get to enjoy. Look for quiet areas of the park where the shore is lined with trees. Sit for a few minutes quietly, and you will soon see many different birds. Enjoying birding from both the land and water at Lovers Key State Park allows you to see the maximum number of birds.

Wear the Right Clothing

While many people do not burn as easy in the spring as in the summer, a wide-brim hat is still the perfect way to protect yourself from the damage that the sun can do. Consider pants that have pockets deep enough to hold your field guide. Choose clothes that blend into the environment. Try to avoid wearing white as birds see it as a sign that danger is near.

Bring the Camera

You will want to record your day of fun at the park. Therefore, make sure to bring your camera with you. If you have an option, consider bringing the one with the highest zoom because it allows you to take the best pictures.

Keep a Journal

You will want to come back to Lovers Key State Park often to look for new birds. Therefore, keep a journal of the birds that you see on each outing and their location. Additionally, consider attending one of the free programs about birds given at the park.

Going birding at Lovers Key State Park is an incredible adventure, keep these birding tips in mind and you’re sure to have a successful trip. Start the day early while the sun is rising. Look for birds from the shore. Then, rent a kayak or canoe to search for birds from the water. Bring your camera and binoculars with you so that you can record your day’s adventures.

We all know that getting away from our everyday tasks and stress can be enjoyable. However, even if it’s just for a short period of time, getting out in nature can have several health benefits. If you need some extra motivation or even some excuses to take a break and immerse yourself in all that Lovers Key has to offer, read on.

Vitamin D

The sun is the best source of vitamin D for our bodies. Vitamin D is actually a hormone that helps to maintain a healthy immune system. Lacking vitamin D can put you at an increased risk for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and osteoporosis. Heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and multiple sclerosis have all been linked with vitamin D deficiency as well. Getting vitamin D from natural sources is always best as supplements can be ineffective and unsafe.

Eye Health

Getting outside can improve your eye health in two different ways. First, it can help prevent computer vision syndrome which is caused by looking at a screen too close for long periods of time. When you are outside, you naturally focus on objects that are farther away which gives your eyes a much-needed break. Secondly, new research shows that being exposed to artificial light can increase nearsightedness.

Better Sleep

As humans, our sleep patterns follow our internal body clock or our circadian rhythm. This schedule naturally follows the sun’s schedule. If you spend too much time away from natural sunlight, it can alter your circadian rhythm and disrupt your sleep pattern. A few consecutive days in nature can really help boost natural sleep patterns for most people.

Clean Air

It’s common knowledge that outdoor air pollution is harmful, however, indoor air pollution is even worse. In fact, indoor air pollution can be between twice and 100 times more concentrated than outdoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution can put you at risk for heart disease, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and asthma. Breathing fresh air outside is much better for your overall health.

Exercise

Getting outside provides an almost automatic opportunity for exercise. Whether it’s a simple brisk walk or a kayaking trip, the exercise possibilities are almost endless when you are outside. Exercise has a multitude of health benefits such as increased fat burning capacity, as well as the potential for prevention of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Psychological Benefits

Getting outside in the sunshine and fresh air also helps clear your mind. It has been linked with better mental well-being, improved attention spans, stress relief, increase serotonin (also known as the feel-good hormone), as well as better emotional stability and more empathy for others. Meditating outdoors can stretch these benefits even further.

Grounding

Finally, and maybe not quite as scientific, is the benefit of grounding. Sometimes referred to as earthing, grounding refers to bare skin contact with a natural surface such as dirt or sand. The theory holds that because the earth is negatively charged we absorb the earth’s electrons when we are barefoot. A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reports that grounding can provide an energizing effect on the body as well as anti-inflammatory actions.

The team at Lovers Key Adventure is very excited about the plans laid out by the park’s new superintendent Robert Steiger. This is actually Bob’s second time to head Lovers Key State Park as he was here from 1994 to 1996 when leadership was combined with Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. When the parks became independent, he went to Delnor Wiggins where he has spent 20 years being their head. The team there says that they will miss him because of his great teaching techniques.

Stopping the Australian Pine

One of Bob’s primary focuses will be on eradicating Australian Pine seedlings. These trees got their start as windbreaks during the late 1800s, but they lead to beach erosion. Their quick growth displaces native vegetation with deeper roots that help to stop beach erosion. Their growth also prevents sea turtles and American crocodiles from building coastal nests. They provide very few resources to wildlife.

The End of Brazilian Pepper Plants

Bob will also be working to stop Brazilian pepper plants. These plants often prevent the growth of plants that do a much better job of providing food for wildlife. Like poison ivy, direct contact with the skin can cause severe irritation. Unless these plants are limited to specific areas, they can cause the total extinction of some plant species in the area who cannot compete against them.

Stopping the Invasive Growth of Ear Leaf Acacia

Bob will also be working to halt the growth of Ear Leaf Acacia. Like the Australian Pine, these trees grow extremely rapidly, so they may stop native species from growing deep roots. They are a nuisance to the environment because they do not break down when dead as regular trees do. They are also a problem because they do not provide many resources for wildlife.

Protecting the Park for Future Generations

Bob says that he has a granddaughter who is two. He hopes that the steps that he takes now will help promote Lovers Key State Park’s native ecosystem so that she can enjoy it as she matures. Bob is just two years away from retirement, but he hopes that he can quickly teach those around him to take better care of the park so that it can be preserved for many years to come. He says that the 1.4 million people who come to the park annually have almost loved it to death.

We look forward to working with Bob in his new capacity. Together, we know that we can help build a park that future generations can enjoy.

It is now time to see the West Indian manatees at Lovers Key State Park as they will be making their annual visit from now until the first part of March. These animals are highly endangered, so the more people become aware of them, the less likely it will be that they disappear entirely. As with any form of marine life, view them from a distance while giving them enough space that they will stay relaxed.

Size and Description

It is hard to miss a full-grown manatee as they can grow up to 11 feet long and weigh up to 1,320 pounds. The light brown or gray manatees that come to visit our park are usually some of the biggest in the world. These animals are the largest of all known sirenians. They often live up to 28 years in the wild and have been known to live over 60 years in captivity. At birth, manatees often are four feet long and weigh up to 60 pounds.

Watching the Manatees

Watching West Indian manatees from one of our kayaks or stand-up paddleboards is an excellent way to witness the antics of this animal fist hand as they are often seen somersaulting, rolling and swimming upside down. It is nearly impossible to witness one of these huge animals without falling in love with the strange creatures.

Food for the Manatees

Manatees routinely feed on about 60 different types of marine plants often spending up to eight hours eating each day. They are crucial for keeping algae in check in our waters. Scientists know that some male manatees eat the feces of female manatees. They believe that manatees do this because it gives them valuable information about the animal’s reproductive cycle. They often use their flippers to dig up plants buried on the seafloor and use their lips to manipulate plants so that they can get them in their mouths. If you look along the shores very carefully, you may find a manatee molar tooth because as they wear them down, their bodies grow new ones pushing the old ones out of the way.

Threats to Manatees

Scientists believe that over 38 percent of all West Indian manatees die because they come in contact with a motor boat or other manmade objects. They simply cannot get out of the way fast enough. Therefore, it is of particular importance to keep a sharp eye out for these animals during their stay near our state park. Manatees have a very low reproductive rate further endangering them.

Manatee Communication

If you listen extremely carefully, then you may be able to hear manatees talking to each other in chirps, whistles, or squeaks. Mothers and children are particularly vocal during the day as a way to keep track of each other’s locations. Mothers and calves are particularly vocal during the day as a way to keep track of each other’s locations.

We hope that you will mark your calendars to come see us very soon to learn more about the manatees. The more you learn, the more you will want to help protect this endangered species.

Teachers need to begin planning now to bring their students to Key Lovers State Park. Even if the weather is a bit nippy, bringing children to the park can help improve their performance on standardized tests, according to numerous studies.

Studies conducted by Stanford University found that people who walk outside are much more creative. Doctor David Strayer at the University of Utah says that it is all about giving the brain a break. When the human body receives that break, then it becomes more creative. Students who are more creative, score higher on standardized tests.

Furthermore, in studies conducted with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) children, it was found that children who played outside scored 81 percent higher on concentration tests. Everyone knows how frustrating it can be to fewer inside all day. This is particularly the case for children with ADHD who need to burn off energy.

Teachers will soon begin fighting the endless colds and flu that attacks their classrooms each year. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that students who were exposed to natural light on a regular basis had fewer infections. Furthermore, research shows that patients who are healing from surgery need 22 percent fewer painkillers when exposed to natural light.

Teachers who bring their students to Lovers Key State Park may experience an improved mood among their students, and even fewer discipline problems in their classrooms in days following the trip. Getting outside for even a few minutes helps fight seasonal affective disorder in both children and adults.

The staff at Lovers Key State Park can help you plan all types of enjoyable activities that tie naturally into your curriculum. For example, students can hike five miles in a maritime hammock forest learning about the habitat located there. Students can learn about the predator cycle or other concepts appropriate to this area.

We can also take children to the water where all types of science experiments can teach the children about low and high tides, water quality and so much more. We can also teach children about the first settlers in the area to make your history lessons more exciting.

There are so many possibilities that your children will be buzzing about their trip for months to come. We make it easy for you to arrange it. The first step is to contact us today.

Lovers’ Key State Park is a beautiful place to take landscape photos. There are so many different options that you can always find something interesting to shoot. Grab your DSLR camera and capture some perfect beach photos that you will be proud to show to anyone.

Rule Of Thirds

Lovers’ Key State Parks four barrier islands offer an incredible variety of landscapes to photograph. Pick out one thing and let it be the focal point of your pictures. Look at your LCD screen as a tic-tac-toe board. Find a focal point and place it where two of the lines intersect, this is known as the rule of thirds. This simple technique sets your focal point off-center and makes your photograph more interesting to look at.

Rule of Thirds – from Academy of Photography

Golden Hour

It is always best to take pictures at the park during its slower hours. That way, you do not have to worry about others getting in your way. The best time to shoot most photos is right after sunrise and during “magic hour” right before sunset. During these hours, the light is scattered, so you will not experience the problems that you do with the sun being too bright in the middle of the day. To take unique photos away from the crowd rent a kayak or a canoe, just make sure you have a dry-bag for your camera!

landscape-photography

Landscape photos can be vertical too – by Light Journeys

If the horizon is in your photo, then try to keep it straight across the frame. Although you will want to play with different options depending on the scene, the horizon should occupy no more than one-third of the photo. This is easy enough to fix using a crop tool in your photo editor afterwards if you didn’t get it quite right.

Long Exposure

The beautiful 2.5-mile long beach at Key Lovers’ State Park makes for dramatic photographs. When shooting beach scenes, consider adjusting the shutter speed. If you want the water to look like it is frozen in place, then set the shutter speed faster than 1/20 second. If you want the water to look like it is moving, then consider setting the speed at about 1/3 second. An interesting technique to try is setting the shutter speed at about four seconds, so the water has a hazy appearance.

long-exposure

Long Exposure by Meho Photography

Play with Filters

Using different filters on your camera during your visit to Key Lovers’ State Park can provide dramatic effects. If you are going to increase your shutter speed, then try using a neutral-density filter because it changes the wavelength of the light the camera sees making your photos even more dramatic. This is especially useful if you are going to rent a canoe or a kayak and take pictures from the water, as it allows the camera’s light sensors to work much better.

You may also want to use an ultraviolet filter to eliminate atmospheric haze. While your eyes may get used to seeing through this haze, even on the hottest summer days, the camera does not and your photos will look hazy without it.

Taking beautiful landscape photos at Key Lovers’ State Park is a wonderful way to spend the day. You will be amazed at the photos that you capture when you follow these simple techniques.

Lovers Key is a great place to go on a date and it isn’t just because of the name. There are plenty of adventures you can have, learn a little bit about yourself and have plenty of fun at the same time. They have many different options kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and even birding. There is a slew of different things that you can do on a date.

The location is a great place to have a second or third date. Because first of all it provides a quiet location where two people can learn more about each other. You can learn what your likes and dislikes are as well as how you jive together. Sometimes not even talking at all and just interacting by canoeing down the waterways. It can be a great place to learn more about the way the other person thinks, how they act and just how they deal with the world around them.

Renting a kayak or canoe  is a great way to see how two people can work both together and apart by being in different boats yet getting to the same place. By spending time together in an activity such as this, as opposed to a dinner at a restaurant, they’ll be able to see if they can remain calm in a situation that requires teamwork and communication. If one person is less experienced, will they be able to accept guidance and follow instructions? Will the person giving the advice be kind and sensitive? This type of activity quickly shows whether two individuals can work and thrive together.

Birding is a fun way to discover the way each person feels about being quiet and one with nature. If one person is enthusiastic about going and then gets bored after a few minutes, while the other person wants to stay on for hours, it might be something to consider. Not saying that this is a dealbreaker for a long term relationship, but it offers a glimpse into future conflicts of interest. Not all successful couples like all the same things. For example, maybe she enjoys reading a book on the beach, while he goes fishing from the shore. The important thing to note here is that they are both there – it’s not like one person wanted to go to the beach and the other hates sand and salt water.

perfect-date-beach

More active couples could try an outdoor sport like stand up paddle boarding, where each person has to stand on their board and keep their balance. They will need to stand or kneel on the board and be able to paddle at the same time. It just takes a little bit of time to learn, but once you learn you will be able to glide over the water with ease and will have had a blast learning together!

These activities include something perfect for land lovers and sea lovers. They could be ideal for a couple-hour date or a full day spent together, but they will be an excellent way to become involved with each other and nature. From looking for birds to trying any of the water activities like boats or paddle boarding you will be sure to have a phenomenal time. You will also have a unique date, which you and your romantic interest is sure to remember.

One of the most popular fitness crazes to hit the waterfront in recent years it the SUP, or stand-up paddle. Matter of fact, the SUP is more than a craze, it has become a daily workout for many individuals who prefer the water to asphalt.

A Workout that’s Fun

For many who use their stand up paddle for exercise, it’s the most fun they’ve ever had working out. We hear every day here at Lovers Key Adventures from new paddle board users that they intend to get their own board when they go home. You’ll see the increasingly popular SUP on lakes, streams and even small ponds as more people drift into fitness on this great waterboard.

Even the Wall Street Journal took note of the rising number of stand-up paddle surfers several years ago. The writer notes that the natural effort exerted to keep balanced and erect does an excellent job of toning and strengthening the back, buttocks, shoulders, arms, and legs. That makes the SUP a total body workout with minimal stress on ankles and knees.

In fact, being on the water keeps you cool while getting your heartbeat up and giving you both aerobic and strength exercise. While paddle boarding has been known in Hawaii and California since the 80s, it is now a national business generating more than $9 billion in sales.

Rentals and Tours

If you have never experienced a stand-up paddle board ride, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get the hang of it here at Lovers Key Adventures. And if you are already an old hand at the sport, you’ll love our great selection of gear for rental  including lightweight 28 lbs soft top boards that are 11’6” long and 33” wide.

These boards are more than a great waterborne exercise machine. With no distracting motors or sails, you can glide around the sights here at Lovers Key State Park. Travel down the nearby estuary to check out the wildlife, or set out on the back bay for a longer adventure. Of course, many enjoy just paddling along the beach, enjoying the sun and salt spray while staying out of the water – if you have good balance!

We also offer training classes (you’ll be surprised how fast you pick up the knack for a SUP), and you can tag along with our numerous guided tours for even more fun.

If you want a great new way to celebrate your wedding, anniversary, or another special event, why not ask “What’s SUP?” Contact us to set up group lessons and tours with your group and you’ll give them an experience they’ll talk about for ages. Join the stand-up paddle crowd and you’ll never see the water the same way again.
